Colorado is the Spanish word for “red colored,” which describes the color of the earth in that state. Colorado is famous for the spectacular natural beauty of its mountains, mesas, canyons and plains. There is a plethora of outdoor recreational activities in Colorado, and the skiing of places such as Aspen, Vail, Telluride and Steamboat Springs arguably rivals any of the top ski resorts in the world. There are also 19 protected areas in Colorado, among some of the most notable of which are Mesa Verde National Park, which is also a UNESCO World Heritage Site, Colorado National Monument, Dinasaur National Park, and Rocky Mountain National Park. Because of the fact that there are so many opportunities for outdoor recreation in Colorado, the population has a reputation for being active and healthy, with the lowest percentage of obesity in the country. Colorado is one of four states that meet in the Four Corners, the others of which are Utah, Arizona and New Mexico. Colorado was the 38th state to be admitted to the United States, and Denver is its capital city.
Native American presence in Colorado goes back about 13,000 years. Among the ancient tribes of the area, perhaps the most mysterious were the ancient Pueblos, also known by archaeologists as the Anasazi, who built their dwellings into cliff walls. Mesa Verde is a fascinating site to see the ancient structures that these people built and lived in. Other well known tribes who still live in the area are the Ute Nation, the Arapahoe Nation, and the Cheyenne Nation.
